A Kanbara reactor is a hot metal pre-treatment facility that can remove sulfur in the hot metal to lower levels and at a cheaper cost than conventional facilities.

A Kanbara reactor (KR) is a mechanical mixer-type hot metal desulfurization facility. It is characterized by its acceleration of the desulfurization reaction through the submersion and rotation of an impeller in hot metal, and subsequent mechanical mixing of the hot metal and desulfurizing agent. The KR process efficiently advances the desulfurization reaction by means of high-speed (approx. 120 rpm) rotation of the impeller. As a result, it enables the reduction of sulfur concentration in the hot metal to low levels of within several dozen ppm using only inexpensive lime as a desulfurizing agent, without the need for expensive magnesium. Desulfurizing agent costs can be significantly reduced by replacing injection-type desulfurization facilities that use magnesium and calcium carbide with KR. (Comparing the injection method using magnesium and calcium carbide to the KR method using lime, the desulfurizing cost can be reduced by approximately 45%.)

The Kanbara reactor was developed by NIPPON STEEL ENGINEERING CO., LTD. and this technology has supplied to many customers both in Japan and abroad. We are capable of providing facilities that are free from troubles such as vibration applying our design technology that utilizes FEM analysis as well as knowledge amassed through many years of experience.

The movable Kanbara reactor is another of our proprietary technologies. The technology is characterized by the ability for one KR to perform desulfurization at multiple stations, as the entire KR vessel can be moved. It offers reduced capital cost compared to having multiple fixed type KR units. The technology saves time on the desulfurization process as it is possible to remove slag at one station while simultaneously performing desulfurization at another station. Appropriate use of the movable KR and fixed type KR increases layout freedom and enables us to respond flexibly to our clients' demands and space restrictions.
