Completion of Phase II Construction of the On-Site Energy Supply Project for Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and Commencement of Operation

NS-OG Energy Solutions (Thailand) Ltd. (hereinafter, "NSET"), a joint venture company between Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co., Ltd. (Representative Director and President: Shinichi Fujiwara; Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; hereinafter, "NSENGI") and Osaka Gas Singapore Pte. Ltd. (CEO: Tetsuji Yoneda; hereinafter, "OGS"), a subsidiary of Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. (Representative Director and President: Takehiro Honjo; Head Office: Chuo-ku, Osaka City; hereinafter, "OG"), has completed Phase II construction of the on-site energy supply project*1 for the Prachinburi Plant of Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd.), and the new energy supply system has started operation in November. Phase I construction was completed in July 2015, and the chillers and the hot water boilers installed at that time have been supplying the plant with hot and cold water ever since. With the completion of phase II construction, the planned on-site energy supply system is now fully up and running. This marks the successful completion of the third such project in Thailand, following the delivery of similar systems to Luckytex (Thailand) Public Company Limited in December 2016 and to Yokohama Tire Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. in May 2017. NSET is owned 70% by NSENGI and 30% by OGS.

This project seeks to reduce energy consumption within the plant by introducing a high-efficiency co-generation system capable of supplying electricity and heat (hot water and cold water) for 15 years. The system recovers steam and hot water from the waste heat generated by a gas engine when it produces electricity, and uses them to supply hot and cold water. In this business model, NSET handles everything from the construction and operation of the co-generation system to procurement of gas as a one-stop energy service.

In terms of environmental benefits, the system is expected to help prevent global warming by significantly reducing CO2 emissions*2. It also helps keep the plant running steadily in the event of a power grid accident. When the co-generation system detects a drop in grid voltage, it promptly switches to autonomous operation mode and continues to supply energy on its own as a standby power source.

Drawing from their extensive experience in construction, operation and maintenance, NSENGI and OG will continue to expand business operations in Thailand by providing energy engineering solutions that deliver excellent environmental and economic performance, helping customers advance their efforts toward the creation of a low-carbon society.

*1 A project designed to provide facility operation (management and maintenance) services in addition to co-generation facility engineering
*2 CO2 emissions reduction of 5,000 tons per year (an estimate based on the results of local performance tests)
