NIPPON STEEL ENGINEERING CO., LTD.'s Tundish Plasma Heater achieves improved quality consistency, productivity improvements and overall energy-saving in the steel mill by stabilizing the casting temperature in a continuous caster!

(ICS2015 Base) Faced with growing demands for improvements in productivity and slab quality in recent years, NIPPON STEEL ENGINEERING CO., LTD. offers a solution to our clients' problems through the provision of the world's only Tundish Plasma Heater technology (NS-TPH). NS-TPH is a device that heats molten steel within the tundish by generating a plasma arc between the molten steel and a plasma torch that is inserted from the upper part of the tundish.

This keeps the molten steel in the continuous caster at a constant temperature, achieving stable solidification and, by extension, stable slab quality. NS-TPH also achieves bloom quality improvement by freely controlling the molten steel temperature. This quality improvement comes in the form of centerline segregation reduction brought about by inclusion-related defect reductions and stable low-temperature casting. In addition, NS-TPH increases the speed of continuous casting compared to conventional technology by reducing the temperature of the upper processes of the continuous caster. This achieves significant productivity improvements with little investment.

This technology has been implemented by us since the 1990s, gaining recognition first within NIPPON STEEL CORPORATION and then winning praise from other Japanese domestic special steel manufacturers.

In recent years we have also succeeded in supplying NS-TPH to customers in China, where there are increasing demands for quality improvement in special steel.
