Our basic oxygen furnace is a long-life facility capable of over forty years of continuous operation. Also, It can achieve further production cost reductions and productivity improvements in combination with high-performance ancillary equipment.

A basic oxygen furnace is a reactor in which oxygen is blown through molten pig iron that is heated to approximately 1,600℃ to convert it into steel. As the basic oxygen furnace shell is exposed to severe high-temperature conditions during use, its material experiences gradual degradation leading to thermal deformation and cracking that necessitates repair and exchange of the furnace body. We have developed the following technologies in order to achieve long vessel life controlling this thermal deformation and cracking.

  1. Development of long-life shell materials: joint development of shell material (SEV295-mod) that possesses both creep resistance (control of thermal deformation) and post-thermal load toughness (control of cracking), together with NIPPON STEEL CORPORATION.
  2. Optimization of furnace shell cooling system: applying a water-cooling system to the top cone part, and an air-cooling system to the barrel part, of the basic oxygen furnace in order to reduce the thermal load on the furnace.

Through the development of the above-mentioned technologies, we have achieved the long-life basic oxygen furnace capable of continuous operation for over 40 years, without requiring any partial repairs due to thermal deformation and cracking.

These technologies can be applied for thickness reduction (weight reduction) of the furnace shell. All of this enables us to provide a more reasonably-priced basic oxygen furnace.

Further we achieve productivity improvements and production cost reductions by combining the furnace with high-performance and highly-reliable ancillary equipment, such as lance, sub-lance and bottom-blowing equipment.
