Award of the Contract for Cokes Dry Quenching system from Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL)

Nippon Steel Engineering Co., Ltd. (Representative Director and President: Yukito Ishiwa; Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; hereinafter, "NSE") and its consolidated subsidiary, Nippon Steel Engineering India Pvt. Ltd. (hereinafter, "NSEI" *1), are pleased to announce that we have been awarded a contract by Steel Authority of India Limited (Chairman and Managing Director: Amarendu Prakash, Headquarters: New Delhi, India; hereinafter, "SAIL"), a state-owned steel maker in India, for the delivery of one unit of Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ) system*2 with a processing capacity of 120 t/h for SAIL's IISCO Steel Plant*3.

This CDQ system will be newly installed as part of the replacement of aging coke ovens at SAIL’s facility and the entire EPC (engineering, procurement, manufacturing and commissioning) scope of work will be executed by a consortium comprising of NSE, NSEI, and TATA Projects Limited*4 (hereinafter, "TPL").

Up until now, SAIL had adopted conventional wet quenching systems or multi-chamber CDQ systems*5 for its coke quenching facilities. However, for new coke oven installations, SAIL now intend to prioritize adoption of advanced single-chamber CDQ technology*6, which is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

NSE’s CDQ technology was highly evaluated for the following reasons:

1) Proven Global Track Record, of over 170 units of CDQ worldwide with high efficiency in steam generation and stable operations.

2) Maximization of Local Content, by leveraging NSEI's capabilities in local engineering and procurement in India

3) Cost Competitiveness, achieved through the foundation of a consortium with TPL.

With this project, NSE Group has now accumulated the total of 13 CDQ system contracts in India. This project marks the first contract awarded by SAIL for NSE Group, and NSE Group intend to focus on further promoting CDQ systems for SAIL as well as other steel manufacturers in India.

NSE Group will continue to enhance the engineering and manufacturing capabilities of NSEI and meet the growing demand for advanced CDQ systems from both private and state-owned steelmakers in India. Through these efforts, we aim to solidify our position as a top supplier in the environmental and energy-saving services, improve customer satisfaction, which we believe ultimately lead to significant contribution to the development of global steel industry, environmental protection, and reduction of CO2 emissions.

  • *1 NSEI is a subsidiary of Nippon Steel Engineering and is well recognized as one of the leading engineering companies in India, with expertise in the engineering, procurement, manufacturing management, construction, and project management of various plant facilities, including CDQ systems. • *2 IISCO Steel Plant: located in Burnpur, Asansol, West Bengal, was established in 1918 and is one of India's most historic steel plants.
  • *3 Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ): CDQ is a system where hot coke removed from coke ovens at a temperature of approximately 1,000°C is cooled and kept dry with inert gas and the resulting steam produced in a waste heat recovery boiler is used to generate electricity. As the sensible heat recovered by heat transfer in the cooling chamber is utilized as a heat source for steam generation, electricity generated by CDQ is clean, environmentally-friendly energy. In addition, compared to the conventional wet quenching type, CDQ brings about advantages such as the reduction of dust emissions and improvement of coke quality.
  • *4 TATA Projects Limited: Tata Projects is one of the most admired Technology led Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) companies in India. TPL provides ready-to-deploy solutions for semiconductor facilities, giga factories, data centers, refineries, green fuels, roads, bridges, integrated rail & metro systems, commercial building & airports, power generation, transmission & distribution systems, chemical process plants, water & waste management, and mining & metal purification systems. (Managing Director and CEO: Vinayak Pai; Headquarters: Mumbai, India).
  • *5 Multi-Chamber CDQ System: a type of system where multiple smaller-capacity CDQ units are used to dry-cool coke. The overall operational efficiency of multi-chamber systems is generally lower compared to single-chamber systems.
  • *6 Single-Chamber CDQ System: a system enabling coke dry cooling with just one unit instead of multiple units. NSE has been dedicated to advancing the scale of CDQ systems for many years, and we are now capable of providing large-scale CDQ systems with a processing capacity of up to 280 t/h per unit.
